HOW TO TRACK THE EFFECTIVENESS AND RESULTS OF THE PSYCHOTHERAPY?
There are several signs that you have found the right psychologist.
SIGNS OF EFFECTIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY
● “You feel comfortable during the session and are looking forward to seeing your psychologist again” – you feel safe and can talk about what happened to you, the childhood traumas that you did not tell anyone about, you can burst into tears and not be ashamed of it. You feel complete acceptance and psychological support.
● “You don’t stagnate” – you notice results and some changes in your life or in your reactions to what is happening. Sometimes other people begin to notice subtle changes in you.
● “You see confirmation of professionalism” – you know that your therapist never stops learning something, taking refresher courses, participating in conferences, etc. During the sessions, you notice that your therapist behaves confidently and knows what he is doing.
● “You see a genuine interest” – you see that your therapist is genuinely interested in what is happening in your life and at the session. During the session, he is completely focused on you and your dialogue. You feel that you are being heard and accepted.
● It is important to understand that psychotherapy is a process. You spent years accumulating your psychological traumas, suppressing them, and learning how to live with them. And it cannot be changed in 1 session. It is important to develop a trusting relationship with your psychologist and check the results after at least 2 months/10 sessions of therapy. Unless, of course, you see stop factors earlier (criticism, psychological abuse, lack of empathy, etc.).
● The results of psychotherapy depend on the effectiveness of the “psychotherapeutic alliance”, which means the contribution of the psychologist and the client to achieve the desired results. 50% is the responsibility of the psychologist and 50% is the responsibility of the client. The psychologist may be the best professional in the world, but if the client is not ready to work, there will be no progress.
WHAT CAN BE THE REASON FOR THE LACK OF RESULTS IN PSYCHOTHERAPY?
● “That’s not your psychologist” – the psychologist and his methods of work do not suit you. You don’t feel that his approach is helping you get to the root causes of your psychological problems.
● “Client resistance” – you would like to solve your internal problems but are not ready to honestly look at yourself, take responsibility for your life, and make a disciplined effort to achieve results. Maybe it’s just not the right time, or you don’t feel so bad.
