WHAT IS WHAT IS PSYCHOTHERAPY, AND WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE? TYPES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY:Psychotherapy — is a serious long-term work, as a result of which a person changes his attitude towards himself and others, begins to act and look at life in a new way, and also increases the level of personal maturity. WHAT IS THE GOAL OF PSYCHOTHERAPY? Karen Horney thought the goal of psychotherapy was to resolve internal conflicts, as a result of which you release some huge resources and internal capabilities. Adler believed its main goal was to reduce the feeling of inferiority. Robert Dilts regarded psychotherapy as a technique for achieving excellence. Cognitive behavioral therapy seeks to model effective behavioral strategies. In general, psychotherapy is aimed at the formation of a mature personality and living a happy life. WHAT ARE THE MAIN TYPES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY? ● Psychoanalysis — is an approach created by Z. Freud, who said that the human psyche consists of several parts: conscious, subconscious, and unconscious. His work was continued and transformed by K. Jung, who deeply explored the figurative and archetypal symbols of our psyche. The psychoanalyst helps you identify and analyze the unconscious motives of certain actions that create difficulties in life, as well as analyze childhood traumas and their neurotic character. The psychoanalyst is what you most often see in movies when the patient lies on the couch and says everything that comes to mind, while the psychoanalyst interprets his words using the association and archetype methods. It is a strictly regulated process that takes place 3-5 times a week within 3-6 years. ● Gestalt therapy. The goal of gestalt therapy is to become more self-aware. The concept of “close gestalt” refers specifically to gestalt therapy and means “to complete an unfinished action”, which helps you gain a holistic view of yourself (gestalt), give up living in the world of the past and fantasies, and be “here and now”. The psychologist helps the client understand what he is experiencing “here and now”, deal with his emotions, and realize his internal conflicts, as well as be aware of the “true I” and take responsibility for his life. The duration of therapy is at least 6 months of weekly meetings. ● Psychodrama. The main goal is to teach people to solve their problems using their fantasies, conflicts, and fears. It is most often carried out in the group therapy format when participants imagine difficult life situations and take over different roles. This helps them deal with negative emotions and internal conflicts, as well as see the situation from a different point of view. The duration is from one session to 2-3 years of weekly meetings. ● Body-oriented therapy — is based on the idea that the body and psyche are interconnected and each psychological trauma remains in the body, forming a chronic muscle tension called muscular armor. Removing this muscle tension helps you remove your psychological problems. The task of the client is to understand his body and realize the bodily manifestations of his needs, desires, and feelings. Duration: group meetings, on average about a year. ● Existential therapy. The main goal is to work with the meaning of life and the individuality of the client. You need to realize there are no universal solutions or universal patterns of behavior, and each of us has unique experiences, behavioral patterns, and emotional reactions. According to this approach, a person must realize that his life, his attitude to life, the situations he gets in, and the opportunities he encounters are unique. Therefore, he must make his unique choice and bear responsibility for it. The duration is from several meetings to several years. ● Neuro-linguistic programming — is the formation of new thinking patterns to activate your resources and achieve goals. It is a communication and thinking technique aimed at changing habitual patterns of interaction, gaining confidence in life, and optimizing creativity. The founders of the direction are R. Bandler and D. Grinder. The duration is from several meetings to 1 year. ● Family therapy — implies working with family members, with a couple, when more than one person is present at the session. The actions and intentions of each participant are perceived not as individual manifestations but as a consequence of the laws and rules of the family system. Meetings are held in a dialogue form when all family members openly express their opinions and get the feeling that they were heard. The duration is from several meetings to several years.услышали.Продолжительность — от нескольких встреч до нескольких лет. ● Transactional analysis — helps you detect the various habitual strategies and life scenarios learned in childhood. It helps you realize your thoughts and behavior through 3 ego states: Inner Parent, Adult, and Child. The creator of this theory is Eric Berne, who wrote the famous book “Games people play” and described the idea that each transaction (i.e. interaction) is made from one role or another and has certain needs. We can play all roles, but the main idea of maturity is to strive as much as possible for the role of an Adult, which helps you resolve many conflicts and difficult life situations. Meetings are held in a dialogue form. The problem is solved through the understanding of different strategies and the needs that lie behind them. The duration is from several meetings to several years. ● Transpersonal therapy — is an attempt to combine Western psychology and Eastern spiritual practices. This approach to psychotherapy is not recognized all over the world. It is often called modern shamanism, but at the same time, it gives good results when working with existential crises and severe stress, as well as when trying to solve life problems that have no logical explanations and origins. You find your way out through the understanding of archetypal images, perinatal experiences, and past-life experiences. Breathing practices and holotropic breathwork are often used. The duration is from one to several meetings. ● Cognitive-behavioral therapy — helps you get rid of irrational attitudes through the understanding of unconscious needs, encouragement of desired behaviors, and lack of reinforcement of unwanted behaviors. In psychotherapy, the focus is on working with automatic thoughts and cognitive distortions. It works great with phobias, anxiety, PTSD, etc. The duration is from several meetings to several years. ● How do I know which type of psychotherapy I need? “All types of psychotherapy are equally effective”. There is such a myth that any psychotherapy is good. It is the same as saying that any sport suits me – basketball, tennis, and yoga. The main thing is to play sports. But you understand it’s not true. If yoga suits you, then most likely you won’t play basketball, and vice versa. It is easier to understand when taking sports as an example since we at least roughly understand what this or that sport is. However, psychotherapy is much more complicated. It is even harder to choose the type of psychotherapy. If you’re not a professional psychologist, you will never know which type of psychotherapy is good for you. Even a psychotherapist may experience difficulties trying to determine what will work best with a particular client. Therefore, if you’re a client, your goal is to find a psychologist who makes you feel comfortable instead of choosing a certain approach. Here is a list of the main approaches. However, today there are more than 100 approaches to psychotherapy.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PSYCHOLOGIST A PSYCHOTHERAPIST, AND A PSYCHIATRIST?Psychologists, psychotherapists, and psychiatrists are specialists who help you solve psychological problems. However, there is a significant difference between them. WHAT IS PECULIAR ABOUT WORKING AS A PSYCHOLOGIST? A psychologist is a specialist with a psychological degree. He knows psychological concepts and how the psyche works. He does not make a diagnosis or prescribe medications. A psychologist works only with mentally healthy people and is most effective in a social context – at school, in a business, as a social worker, on a helpline for victims, or in a clinic as psychological support for patients. If you want to truly understand yourself and your life, you need a therapist; if you need a one-time consultation, a psychologist may be enough. A psychologist helps you speak out and get support without understanding the origins of the problems or creating the basis for personal transformation. WHAT IS PECULIAR ABOUT WORKING AS A PSYCHOTHERAPIST? A psychotherapist is a medical doctor who specializes in psychotherapy. A psychotherapist can work with healthy and borderline states, prescribe drugs, and make diagnoses. He helps the client deeply understand the causes of life difficulties, ways of thinking, and behavior patterns. There are many different approaches in psychotherapy: gestalt therapy, existential therapy, transactional therapy, etc. To become a specialist in one of these areas, psychotherapists receive additional education and undergo a deep course of personal therapy so as not to solve personal problems at the expense of clients. A psychotherapist helps you understand the true causes of current difficulties and create the basis for personal transformation, changing behavior patterns and, as a result, improving the quality of life. He does not give advice or teach the client how to live. People often confuse a psychologist and a psychotherapist, equating them to each other. Thus, they confuse a specialist and a psychologist who works with healthy people. WHAT IS PECULIAR ABOUT WORKING AS A PSYCHIATRIST? A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who works with mentally ill people, makes diagnoses, and prescribes drugs. Psychiatrists usually deal with patients who have endogenous depression (caused by organic changes in the brain and not by life circumstances), schizophrenia (delusions, hallucinations, etc.), suicidal thoughts, a complete lack of critical thinking, and other symptoms of mental illness.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERECE BETWEEN A PROFESSIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST AND A NON-PROFESSIONAL ONE?Turning to a psychologist, you may find it difficult to determine his professional level without being a specialist in this field. Here are some signs that will help you understand what to look for when working with a psychologist. SINGS OF A NON-PROFESSIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST: ● Lack of privacy – “what happened in Vegas stays in Vegas”, what is discussed in a session does not go beyond the session. If a psychologist wants to use your case for an article, post, or discuss it with a supervisor, he must ask your permission. He also has to change some details so that it is impossible to recognize you in this material. ● Romantic relationship with a client – while working with a psychotherapist, there is a feeling of closeness and complete acceptance that everyone is looking for in a romantic relationship. The client may develop a romantic interest and transfer it to the therapist, but romantic and sexual relationships between the therapist and the client are prohibited. ● Criticism and psychological abuse – if you feel some kind of criticism from a psychologist, you are unlikely to achieve any results since there is a lack of trust, empathy, and acceptance between you and your psychologist. In such a situation, it is better to immediately stop psychotherapy. ● Advice – the psychologist does not give advice but creates a safe atmosphere so that the client makes decisions, takes responsibility, and sees alternative and healthier behavioral patterns. ● Guarantee of instant results and implementation of dreams – psychological problems cannot be solved in one session. The path to maturity is a journey, not a leap. You can only jump into the abyss of disappointment. If you are looking for a magician, you will find a cheater. Do not believe in instant results. ● Amnesia – the psychologist does not remember what happened in the previous session and the name of your husband (after 5 sessions). And you have a feeling that no one is listening. ● “Let’s talk about it” – you feel that your psychotherapy is just a conversation. There are no practices, no goals, and no feeling of actually working on the problem. SINGS OF A PROFESSIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST: ● Continuous development – your psychologist has a degree in psychology or medicine, regularly attends refresher courses, conferences, and supervision groups, as well as undergoes personal therapy. ● Personal therapy – at least 100 hours, it’s like a kind of guarantee that the psychologist will not project his problems onto the client but will work them through with his psychotherapist. ● Supervision – at least 50 hours, it is an analysis of complex, ambiguous situations and mistakes from practice with a more experienced colleague. The more hours spent on supervision, the higher the competence of the specialist. ● “Do no harm” is the main commandment of a good psychologist. He maintains a trusting atmosphere, sincerely empathizes with you, focuses on your needs, and listens to you carefully. He’s tactful and charming but does not try to please you. He can gently defend his position and is ready to listen to your opinion.

HOW TO TRACK THE EFFECTIVENESS AND RESULTS OF THE PSYCHOTHERAPY?There are several signs that you have found the right psychologist. SIGNS OF EFFECTIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY ● “You feel comfortable during the session and are looking forward to seeing your psychologist again” – you feel safe and can talk about what happened to you, the childhood traumas that you did not tell anyone about, you can burst into tears and not be ashamed of it. You feel complete acceptance and psychological support. ● “You don’t stagnate” – you notice results and some changes in your life or in your reactions to what is happening. Sometimes other people begin to notice subtle changes in you. ● “You see confirmation of professionalism” – you know that your therapist never stops learning something, taking refresher courses, participating in conferences, etc. During the sessions, you notice that your therapist behaves confidently and knows what he is doing. ● “You see a genuine interest” – you see that your therapist is genuinely interested in what is happening in your life and at the session. During the session, he is completely focused on you and your dialogue. You feel that you are being heard and accepted. ● It is important to understand that psychotherapy is a process. You spent years accumulating your psychological traumas, suppressing them, and learning how to live with them. And it cannot be changed in 1 session. It is important to develop a trusting relationship with your psychologist and check the results after at least 2 months/10 sessions of therapy. Unless, of course, you see stop factors earlier (criticism, psychological abuse, lack of empathy, etc.). ● The results of psychotherapy depend on the effectiveness of the “psychotherapeutic alliance”, which means the contribution of the psychologist and the client to achieve the desired results. 50% is the responsibility of the psychologist and 50% is the responsibility of the client. The psychologist may be the best professional in the world, but if the client is not ready to work, there will be no progress. WHAT CAN BE THE REASON FOR THE LACK OF RESULTS IN PSYCHOTHERAPY? ● “That’s not your psychologist” – the psychologist and his methods of work do not suit you. You don’t feel that his approach is helping you get to the root causes of your psychological problems. ● “Client resistance” – you would like to solve your internal problems but are not ready to honestly look at yourself, take responsibility for your life, and make a disciplined effort to achieve results. Maybe it’s just not the right time, or you don’t feel so bad.

HOW TO WORK WITH A PSYCHOLOGIST?● What does the meeting with a psychologist look like? It often consists of a discussion of what has happened since the last session, identifying key experiences and what needs to be worked through, as well as a practical part (when you use practices to work through what has been discussed). Between sessions, it is useful to do homework and keep a diary of self-reflection, which helps you transfer the results of sessions to real life. ● How long does it take to see a psychologist? The average regularity of meetings with a psychologist is once a week, in an acute period you may need 2 times. To make the psyche get used to the systematic work on psychological problems, as well as accustom it to a certain degree of acceptance and support, it is vital to agree on the regularity of meetings. It is almost impossible to estimate how much time is needed to achieve significant improvements and promote life changes. On average, you may need from 6 months to 1 year to achieve some significant changes. Clients with a wide range of psychological problems may need several years. The main thing is to focus on how you feel. If you notice that when you come to a psychologist, you don’t have any worries or problems that you rather want to work through, you may have already reached a plateau. In this case, you can stop working with your psychologist and return after some time when there is a need. ● What is the difference between online therapy and offline therapy? In fact, there is no difference. Currently, more and more clients are beginning to give preference to online therapy. Benefits of online therapy: no need to waste time on the road, you can work with your psychologist from anywhere in the world and stay in a comfortable home environment, which helps create conditions for more open interaction. ● How much does a good psychologist’s session cost? Numerous online psychologists offer a price of 10-20 euro per hour of work. Besides, many people are sure that’s a normal price for a good specialist. Let’s analyze if that’s true. To become a good specialist, you need to graduate from a university and take advanced training courses. Each good course costs at least 500 euro or even 1000 euro if it is international. To improve the level of services provided and confirm qualifications, a good psychologist must take a refresher course at least 1-2 times a year. He also needs to attend supervisory groups or individual meetings, which cost at least 100-200 euro per group or 50 euro per session. He also has to pay for personal therapy, which costs 100 euro per session. At the same time, he must live and pay for his human needs. How is it possible to do this at a session cost of 20 euro? Well, only if you take 10 clients a day. But in this case, a psychologist quickly burns out and cannot actually help the client. There are also offers of 5,000-10,000 euro for 1 session. That’s an inflated price, which is not based on the professionalism of a psychologist but on good marketing or manipulative selling techniques. On average, a professional psychologist who regularly improves his professional level costs 80-200 euro per session. ● What to do if you cannot afford a good specialist? You can turn to a psychologist with little experience but with a good education and international certificates – this may be the best solution. Besides, it is better to attend training courses from good specialists to learn how to manage your costs. ● Is free psychotherapy effective? If a person can pay for psychotherapy but is looking for free options, he’s most likely manifesting his internal attitude: “That’s not something valuable that I am ready to pay for”, which means he doesn’t believe the therapy will work. Like any work, the work of a psychologist must be paid for by the client. By paying for psychotherapy, you declare your intention to change something in your life. It is also very important that you pay for it with your own money. There is also volunteer work when a psychologist works for free in situations of major disasters or significant crises. What’s more, there is free psychological assistance for people in difficult economic situations. As a rule, it is limited to a few sessions.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED PSYCHIATRIC HELP?The attitude towards psychologists has finally changed. However, there is still a pattern that if I go to a psychologist, I am crazy. In real life, the opposite is true: someone who believes that he does not need a psychologist has more psychological problems than someone who admits that he needs psychological support to solve internal problems. The courage to acknowledge the existing problems and take responsibility for their solution is the choice of a psychologically mature person. One way or another, we will have to learn all the life lessons, but the question is at what cost: the cost of consulting a psychologist or a broken family, mentally injured children, and lack of happiness throughout the years. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS THAT YOU NEED A PSYCHOLOGIST? ● “I’ve been through a divorce, severe stress, loss of a loved one, etc.” – it is better to go through any crisis with the support of a psychologist if you want to complete the healing as quickly as possible and leave this trauma in the past instead of dragging it along for many years and experiencing pain and other negative emotions. ● “I’m walking in circles” – you notice repetitive scenarios in your life. You get a job, but six months later, a great boss turns into the same tyrant as the previous 2. You start a relationship, but the man turns into the same boring alcoholic as the previous partners in your life. Such situations mean that something in your psyche needs healing, and external events are the only way to catch your attention. There is no other way since your psyche hid this psychological trauma deeply inside, as well as closed it with psychological blocks so that it would not bother you every day. ● “I have a bad relationship with my parents” – your parents take too much place in your life, they require you to inform them of every step you take, and you still live with your parents at 30 years old. Or you do not communicate with your parents at all and cannot stand even 5 minutes nearby. These situations are related to separation issues that need to be resolved if you want to establish a more mature and happy life. You constantly have internal dialogues with your parent and hold all the resentments and unresolved conflicts. ● “I cannot bear it anymore” – everything infuriates you, your once beautiful life has become dull and meaningless. Everything you have long been striving for has turned out to be just an illusion. “I seem to be a happy person. I am successful and I have everything I need. But in the morning I don’t even want to wake up and return to this “wonderful” life.” You experience outbursts of anger. You feel tearful and depressed for no somatic reasons. ● “I cannot reach my full potential” – I am doing some insignificant things. Is it my destiny to do this meaningless work? I cannot force myself to go to work. I let things slide. I want to do something that will make me happy and benefit other people. Do I have absolutely no talent? ● “I drink, eat, and work too much” – the word “too” most often signals an internal “emotional hunger” that you want to saturate with something, but you fail. Or it is an attempt to escape from reality that brings you no joy. You are trying to relieve stress, relax a little, and feel happy. However, it does not happen, and the dose increases. ● “I’m doing great, but there are many things in my life I don’t want to remember” – you experienced some kind of trauma, hid it in the farthest corner of your psyche, and just live on. But this trauma has not been healed and, therefore, you need a lot of psychic energy to keep this trauma far in the subconscious.

HOW TO CHOOSE A PSYCHOLOGIST?● When choosing a psychologist, his personality and his ability to hear you are quite relevant. The main tool of a psychologist is his psyche. To some extent, he should attract you with his personality traits and inspire confidence as a professional. There are no psychologists that suit everyone. The psychologist who is good for your friend may not be good for you. Sometimes it takes a long time to find your psychologist. Feel free to search forums, watch YouTube videos, or ask for recommendations. ● Why do I need a psychologist? I’d rather ask a friend for advice! It seems that a friend and a psychologist are almost the same things. Good friends are those people whom we trust, whom we can tell everything about ourselves and get support and acceptance. The same thing is about a psychologist. However, there is a big difference. Your friend can support you in a difficult situation and advise what to do. But your friend is guided by his own view of how he would act in a particular situation. We often know that it is good advice, but we do not follow this advice. A psychologist does not give advice but creates conditions for detecting ineffective strategies and taking responsibility for new decisions and their implementation. He directs you based on the knowledge of how mental processes work and taking into account the characteristics of your personality, as well as your needs and mental constructions. As a result of interaction with a friend, you get good advice and support; as a result of interaction with a psychologist, you get support and personal growth, and, in the long run, change your life for the better. ● Why do I need a psychologist if no one knows me the way I know myself? That’s true and not true at the same time. According to Jung, our personality consists of several parts. Our “ego” is responsible for socialization, achievement, and defense, and we know this part quite well. Our “true I” is our true purpose, true goals, and needs that we often suppress for the sake of effective existence in society. Our “shadow” is the dark side of our personality and shortcomings, which are often suppressed but require healing. Therefore, on the one hand, we know ourselves well, but there is a large part of our personality that is outside the zone of our consciousness. And it is almost impossible to realize all these parts and work them through alone, even if you have a psychological degree. ● How to formulate a request for a psychologist? A clear request and the goals of psychotherapy are formulated together with your psychologist during the first sessions. Therefore, you can start work with the wording: “I cannot bear it anymore. I’m tired of everything,” and then you will decipher it together with your psychologist. Questions that can help formulate a clearer request: What exactly is bothering you and how long does it last? Why do you need a psychologist right now? What exactly happened? What exactly are you feeling? What important events in your life may be related to the current problem? Where do you think are the origins of this problem? ● Questions that you may ask your psychologist at the very beginning: What is your degree? What refresher courses did you take? How often/how many? Which psychotherapeutic approach do you use? Are you in personal therapy/supervision? What kind of requests do you usually get? What kind of clients do you work best with?
